Interview with the fabulous Claudia Dain + Giveaway

Today we have the fabulos Claudia Dain here with us! Hello Claudia! It’s so good to have you join us! I’m a huge fan of your books and have been for years! So it’s a big honor to have you here!!!

JJ: Please tell us about your upcoming release How to Dazzle a Duke the fourth book in your Courtesan’s series.

CD: Thank you for inviting me, Jenn. A chance to talk about The Courtesan Chronicles? I’m in!

How To Dazzle A Duke picks up where The Courtesan’s Wager left off. Penelope Prestwick is determined to marry a duke and, being a clever girl, she’s watched what Sophia Dalby has been doing. Namely, arranging very quick and proper marriages in a highly improper fashion. Improper or not, Penelope cares only that she get her duke. Penelope goes to Sophia and asks for her help in snaring her man. Sophia is more than happy to help, for a price. Penelope will pay any price for her duke, any price but patience. And so Penelope charges in, saying all the wrong things and behaving very improperly, and in doing so, gaining the attention of the last man she wants.

JJ: Sophia is such a vibrant and interesting character I just love her! Regency England and the ton was an amazingly restrictive time in society and it’s so much fun to see Sophia ruffle all those prim feathers and stir up such fun and scandalous liaisons for her charges! How did you initially come up with the idea for her and this wonderful series? And how did you go about researching the life of a famous courtesan for the books?

CD: I love Sophia! Sophia is the anchor character of these books. She’s the center, the hub around which all the other characters spin. It’s her actions that drive each story, and her backstory that drives her actions. Part of the mystery of the series is learning a bit more of her complicated and dark backstory in each book, a sort of connect-the-dots so that we can eventually see who she really is and what drives her, and why.

I needed a character that was outside of British society, who had another sensibility, other rules of behavior and other life goals in order to be able to humorously shake up the rule-bound Regency the way I wanted to in these books. Creating a character that was reared as an Iroquois was the way I found to do it. Sophia’s mother was of the British aristocracy, her father an Iroquois sachem. She is at the top of the social pile in both worlds, but those worlds are nothing alike. She straddles both successfully, and she has a lot of secrets.

As to courtesans, I read every biography I could find, and there are quite a few out there. I made sure that Sophia was a courtesan in the Georgian age and that she married her earl in the Georgian age; things like that were possible then. In the late Regency? Very unlikely. In the Victorian? I’d say nearly impossible. So the setting of these books had to be very precise.

JJ: Are we going to see Sophia get her own story and get matched up herself before the series ends? (I hope!)

CD: Oh, yes, I have that all planned. I know her soul mate. I know what he brings her that she needs. I know everything about her emotional arc. Her romantic story does begin in tiny pieces in each of the books so far, so you should be able to tell who her guy is, but the whole story will get one book, if my dreams come true.

I have heard from my publisher that the series won’t continue past book 5 (as yet untitled) because of low sales numbers. The economy hasn’t helped, that’s for sure! I do think that if sales increase, this series will continue on. I have to believe that because I don’t want to think about this series ending.

I’ve never fallen in love with a character the way I have for Sophia. And it’s not just her, but the whole world of these books that has captivated me. When I sit down to write, I call it Going To My Happy Place. That’s what it is for me. If I were clever enough to think up a tagline for this series it would have been, “Escape To Happiness.” That’s what it is for me, every line of these books. Who doesn’t need an escape to happiness on a regular basis?

JJ: I receive your newsletter and I was very sad to see this! I so hated to hear that because the books are just wonderful truly! They are an instant buy for me and go on my keeper shelves. I want to say that I truly hope you get to continue this series, it’s so much fun and such a great series it would truly be a shame to see it end so soon!

JJ: Did you always want to be an author?

CD: I did and I didn’t. I did when I was a kid, but my mom talked me out of it. Her daughter? Starving in some attic? But I did return to it, the love of writing having never left me, and I’m so glad I did.

JJ: What is your all time favorite book or books if you are like me and can’t choose just one lol?

CD: Oh, I really can’t choose just one. For me, a favorite book is rooted in time. My favorite book when I was in my early teens was A Wrinkle In Time, for example. Do I still love it? Absolutely, but it’s not my favorite book anymore. I keep reading and I keep finding new favorites!

JJ: What would be that special book that you have written yourself? Do you have a personal favorite?

CD: I’m one of those annoying people who loves the last book she wrote the most. It’s the book that’s the most vivid in my mind, and it has the gloss of being finished! I never love the book I’m writing since I’m still in the belly of the beast, as it were.

JJ: Who are some of your biggest influences in writing?

CD: Honestly, my English teachers during my school years. They taught me how to write. It’s grunt work, teaching all the ins-and-outs of construction, grammar, spelling, memorizing all the prepositions! But it was essential. Because they gave me the tools, I discovered that I loved to write. My schoolteachers were the first ones to applaud and encourage my writing efforts as well, so I really can’t say enough good things about them.

JJ: What do you do on a typical writing day?

CD: I wake up when I want to (this is the biggest perk in my life), get ready for the day, treadmill, tackle the business of the day via email, eat lunch, and then write. I take a lot of breaks when I write; I’m not one to sit at the computer for six hours, but I do put in a lot of hours at it in a day. I normally don’t call it quits until 9 or 10 PM.

JJ: Do you listen to music while you are writing and if so what music is it?

CD: Quiet! Total and complete. I am too easily distracted by music.

JJ: If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?

CD: Sophia. No question. She’s so outrageous, so strong, so smart, so ruthless and so kind. Such a complex, layered woman, and such a survivor. She my idol.

JJ: You have written about various times and settings in your novels over the years if you could time travel what period and time would you like to visit?

CD: All of them! I love history. I love the research, love learning about the past, particularly about how people thought in different time periods. Living in a certain place in a certain time changes the way you think about everything. I love that. What do you believe and why? I love exploring that and bringing it out in my novels.

JJ: What would be the best way for readers contact you? Do you have a website? Email address? MySpace site? Blog? Message Board? Group?

CD: I feel like I’m everywhere! I have a website (http://www.claudiadain.com/), a blog with other wonderful authors (http://www.thegoddessblogs.com/), a facebook page (claudiadain). The only place you’re not likely to find me is the grocery store!

JJ: And a favorite question of mine that I have to ask all my guests lol... Do you ever use real life actors or actresses as how you see your characters when you write in your head? I know I personally see them as the main characters a lot in the books I read when I’m reading them so I was just wondering if authors do that as well when they are writing them?

CD: I don’t necessarily use anyone famous, but I do use faces to hold a character in my head. It’s an easy shortcut for me since I have so many characters in the Courtesan books. For example, the five sons of Hyde are each blond and blue eyed; how to make them look different for the reader? I use photographs of five different blond, blue-eyed men. If it’s easy for me to tell them apart, to see the differences, it should be easy for the reader. I hope!

JJ: And last but not least you graciously wanted to do a giveaway of one of your books to one of the lucky readers here?

CD: I’d love to give away a copy of The Courtesan’s Wager, book 3 in the series. It’s a nice set-up for How To Dazzle A Duke, which I hope you’ll give a try.

JJ: That would be wonderful! It's a great read! So for those of you that would like to enter for the chance to win the Courtesan's Wager just comment on this post, and be sure to leave your email so that we can contact you if you win! Also if you would like an extra entry just become a follower of the blog here if you aren't already and if you are a follower you will get an extra entry for the contest as well! :)

JJ: Thank you so much Claudia for taking the time to do this for my blog. I appreciate it more than I can say! And very best of luck with the Courtesan series may it continue on for as long as you wish to pen them hon!

CD: Thanks so much, Jenn. You’re such a gracious host. I’ve had a wonderful time spilling my guts all over your blog!

I just got the ones in from NOR for me to review Claudia Dain's How to Dazzle a Duke, Cindy Miles' Thirteen Chances, and I won three books on blogs! *Does happy dance!!!!* I won Tortured by Amanda McIntyre on her blog tour! I won SO INTO YOU by Sandra Hill from Cathie at Caffey's Reads! And I just found out that I won Jodi Thomas' A Texan's Luck over at Kritie J's Place as part of the Great Western Drive! *Note that avatar should have said in this case so many to die for books so little time lol*

This isn't even counting the haul I made at the used book store I found some of the great older westerns that were recommended by Kristie and the Gals in the Great Western Drive so I was very happy about that too!

And I have a tidbit of news that might get you reading Jo Goodman's fabulous new Western Never Love a Lawman a few days before it's officially suppose to hit the stores! I found it at my local Wal-mart already out on the shelves yesterday!!! I was so surprised when I stopped by to browse the books and saw it because it's not suppose to be out before Sept. 1st so take a look it just might be out already!!!!! ;)

With all these great books I have only one BIG problem which one to read next!!!!!! AAAHHHH LOL!!! I may have to close my eyes and just point to one because I honestly can't decide which I want to dive into first! But it's a great problem to have!

Leontine had posted a great little quiz she found on BookBrowse.com I took it too and here is what I got...

Your responses place you into two different groups - the involved reader and the serial reader. Not only do you love to read, but you also love finding out about new and interesting books and the authors who write them. You're also a publisher's dream, because once you discover a favorite writer you tend to stick with him/her through thick and thin - but even you need to discover some new blood from time to time!

I have to say they pegged me good on that one because once I find an author and or books I like I pimp them all I can to others LOL! I wanna share the book love!

Thank you from Claudia Dain! What I'm reading tidbit and more!

Hello all!!! I got an email from Claudia Dain this morning and she says thank you so much to all of you for the support for her beloved Courtesan's series! She really wants to continue on with this and she said she would take all the support that everyone can give her gladly, and with many thanks! She said it brought tears to her eyes! So please do keep posting about it on your own blogs and chat it up on any romance forums you belong to and let's save this great series!

(Also Claudia fans be sure to come by on Monday Aug. 31st for a special interview with Claudia and a giveaway as well!!!!)

Leontine and Amy also mentioned that Delilah Marvelle's series is going to be canceled as well I hadn't heard this and I'm sad to know that as well. I haven't had a chance to try Delilah's books yet, but I had been eyeing them for a while and I plan on getting them now! I'm sad to know it won't continue on. We must support the series that we love or else they can't continue, let's not forget that as readers. Because it is such sad news and a true loss for romance when this happens. :(

Yesterday I read some of the reading tidbits posts on some of my fellow bloggers sites. That is such a wonderful idea I wanted to do it as well, but I missed doing it on Tuesday so I'm gonna be a rebel and make this one a Thursday tidbit lol. Here it is....

Pick a book on your nightstand. Close your eyes. Open the book to any page. Pick two "teaser" lines. Show us the cover of the book.

So he willed himself to stop imagining her lush nakedness or how badly his fingers itched to glide along every curve and dip of her creamy, satiny smooth skin. He certainly didn't need to think about her flowing raven tresses...

And last but not least thanks so much to Danni for the Bingo award! I have added it to my awards slideshow! You can see my nominees here! I appreciate it so so much hon! BIG HUGS!!! She has a beautiful blog you all should go over and there and visit! :)

Goodies, Contest of a different kind, & news from Claudia Dain

Well my dears I'm sorry I am getting this up so late today but here are the first set of goodies for you all. I have free avatars and wallpapers up on the goodies page now... and I hope to have some soon from some great authors covers as well! (More on that later in the next few weeks.) I hope you like them! (Now if I can just figure out how to close the huge gaps in the tables here on blogger UGH lol)

Now for the contest. Ok I wanted to do a really cool contest for some great reads but alas my wallet is disturbingly empty this week so I thought I would try offering something I can do! Many of you know already that I do websites and graphic design, so I thought I would hold a little contest where the winner will get their choice of a free header graphic or any type of graphic they want designed to use on their page or blog. Now it can be anything they like - something about books, their favorite celebs or something from their favorite personal photos. I'll do up wallpapers of them or make something for their blog or site, whatever suits the winners fancy. :) It's not as great as books I know but it's something I can offer now until I get some extra spending money! All you have to do is leave a comment on this post and say you want to enter and leave your email for me to be able to contact you. I'll run this contest until the end of the week.

And finally for today I wanted to share a message from Claudia Dain that I got today. I'm a huge fan of her Courtesan's series and I was very sad to see this but we as readers can help keep the series alive! Take a look...

Dear Readers,
I've spent days debating with myself about whether to share the news with you or not, struggling between wanting to keep things happy and wanting to be honest with you. Honesty, by a narrow margin, won out. I need your help. Unless sales increase for The Courtesan Chronicles the series will be cancelled. I got the word from my editor while at the RWA conference in July. There just aren't enough sales. They simply won't publish a series that isn't selling well.

I'm completely devastated. I love this world and I don't want to leave it. I had planned ten books for the series, possibly more, but it's going to end at five. The fourth book in the series, HOW TO DAZZLE A DUKE, is being released on September 1 in trade paperback, to be followed by the mass market edition of THE COURSESAN'S SECRET on October 6. THE COURTESAN'S WAGER, mass market, will be issued in April of 2010.

If you love these books, please buy them, and encourage anyone else who loves a witty, bawdy romp of a story to buy them. My last hope is that Berkley will see the numbers jump and will give this series another chance. I'm embarrassed to say this, but in case you didn't know...buying a book used doesn't count as a sale. The publisher doesn't make an money on a used book sale, and it's always about the bottom line, isn't it?

I never did like studying business models. Leave me alone in a room to write and I'm happy. The business side of things is so...businessy. Thanks for loving these books. I know you do because I've never received such glowing fan mail in my life. It's been a joy, creating this Courtesan world and wandering around in it with you. Thank you for going on the ride with me. Thank you for being there. And thank you for listening, even though I had nothing cheerful or funny to say.

Claudia

So please anyone who is a big fan of Claudia and her wonderful Courtesan series go out and purchase your copy to keep this wonderful series going!(And buy the previous books too if you haven't already!!! You won't be sorry! They are fantasitic reads!) Support the Courtesan Series!!!

Guest Blogger: Cheryl St. John

Character Names by Cheryl St. John

My stories don't begin to unfold until I've named my characters and named them correctly. How do I know if a name is right? I can't explain it. If their name is right, I can see them. I can hear them talk. I can create scenes and situations for them. If a name is wrong, there is no story.

Whenever I get an idea for a character or a plot or theme, I grab my binder with my worksheets, a notebook and a few fun pens, a cup of India Spice Chai tea, and then make myself comfy on the sofa. I use a story grid to flesh out my characters' goals and motivations and the points of the story. But I use a stack of books and folders to find their names. I keep lists of everything, so of course I have lists of names I want to use.

Most important for me is that their name sound like a real person—and a real person I'd want to know. It must be a name that I won't mind typing 400 times. I just checked my last completed book, and I used the hero's name 403 times. Sometimes I fall in love with a name, but it's tough to type quickly, so what I do is create an auto correct for it in Word. For example, if the heroine's name is Elisabeth Ann or Eliza Jane, I create an auto correct so that each time I type in elsb+spacebar, it changes to the name I want.

Where do I get my lists of names? A lot of places. I'm an avid movie watcher and also check out the new season TV shows. If I sit with a notebook and a fun pen (notice how pens are required to be special?) I can call it work. So I watch every line of the credits and write down names I like. If I'm watching a movie, I'll take notes regarding what worked for me and what didn't. It's research. I save graduation programs and baby name books.

What else is important when choosing a name? Sometimes nationality. Sometimes connotation: I probably wouldn't name a nuclear physicist Tiffany. No offense to any nuclear physicists named Tiffany, but it just wouldn't work for most of us. Tiffany is a teenager's best friend. On the other hand, you can go against stereotype, for instance naming an enormous woman Daisy or a tiny dog Rambo.

It's confusing to the reader if two characters' names are similar or their names start with the same letter. Personally, I get lost if a writer does that. I catch that first letter and if there are two similar, my brain doesn't associate it quickly enough, so I constantly rethink and recheck to see who this person is, so I’m jerked out of the story. Here's how I prevent that confusion and others with names: I keep a 5x7 index card with all the characters' names on it. At the bottom I write the alphabet. Every time I use a letter in a first or last name I put a strike through a letter. Of course I often use a letter two or three times, but some are for last names and others for secondary characters that won't be confused.

I also create a style sheet for each book. This is a page or two that I turn in with the manuscript. It contains a list of all the character names and all the places, streets, businesses, proper nouns. This reference helps me in creation of the story and in turn helps the copy editor. And it sure comes in mighty handy when I do a sequel!

Once or twice I've gotten hung up in the creation of my story in the planning stages or first chapters. The person’s name was nagging at me, because I never was quite convinced about it. When I’m certain about a name, I know it. So I changed it and the story moved on.

Once when I had revised a story proposal, taking out the hero and replacing him, I was completely stumped for a name and couldn't develop the guy. I held a contest on my blog to name him. As soon as I saw the particular name, I knew it was the right one. With his name in place, the character sprang to life.

My current hero and heroine for my work in progress are Nathan Landry and Gabrielle Frost aka Rachel Morgan. Nathan Landry is a city attorney in 1870 Wyoming Territory. He’s a self-made man who got a law degree, ad brought a railcar full of lumbar west to sell and make enough to establish a couple of businesses. A young wife traveled west with him, but she died and he has three small children and aspirations for political office. His name sounds like him, doesn’t it?

I can’t tell you about Rachel yet, sorry. But she has a vivid past as Gabrielle Frost—a fake French name and a fake French accent. I don’t even have a title for this story yet. Names and a title come first. I’ve never thought about how many characters I’ve named over my career to date, but it’s got to be a lot of them in thirty-five books now.

My upcoming December book has Wesley Burrows and Mariah Spangler. Wes has been delivering mail in the Yukon for the past several years, but an accident laid him up and a mailbox full of letters brings him to the states. Mariah is an achiever and single mother in a huge German family that runs a brewery. All of her sisters and brothers have German names—and there are a lot of them. I had to name dogs, too. Yuri and Felix are Alaskan sled dogs.

I don't like frivolous names or names that are difficult to pronounce. Even if I'm not reading aloud, I want to be able to know how to think it correctly. How about you? Is there anything you find distracting about a particular name or spelling of a name? Do you like plain names or exotic?

Did you ever think about how much work goes into naming an entire cast of characters?

Vampires, Werewolves, and Ghosts OH MY!

Every romance lover knows that paranormals are hot, hot, hot, these days. And as a huge lover of paranormals I'm very happy by this fact! Give me a good book full of sexy vampires, howling good werewolves, and romantic ghosts and I am one happy camper! (I am not particularly fond of books that deal with demons as main characters, because I personally believe that demons are real and not a good thing in any aspect. So I avoid those books, but that's my own personal thing. I have read a few that had them as secondary characters in them i.e. Charlaine Harris' Sookie Series, and Sherrilyn Kenyon's Dark Hunter series to name a few.)

I will also confess here that I absolutely HATE the Twilight series! I just don't get why on earth those books are as popular as they are bleh! (I couldn't even make it through the first novel after four chapters I couldn't take it anymore.) No hate mail or posts about that please they just aren't my cup of tea. I know many who love them to no end! I'm just not one of them, I'll never get the sparkly vampires UGH LOL.

And while I love them to distraction I know that not all romance lovers like this particular genre but I wonder if that's more due to the fact that most haven't given them a chance. Some think that they are too morbid or gory. And while many do contain violence I don’t think that the ones I have read have been any worse in the gore and morbid departments than many other historical romances. While everyone knows that vamps and werewolves drink blood etc. many of the books out there feature good vamps who either see alternatives to attacking humans via artificial blood or blood from blood banks and other sources. Many of them also hate what they are they try to overcome their inner drives to be as human as they can and despise the blood lust that tries to rule them. I have always thought that was a fabulous metaphor for real life in many ways. Don't we all have things that haunt us and that we wish we could overcome? I know I do and I have always felt for the tortured and guilt ridden heroes in paranormals because of that very fact.

I have literally shelves full of books dealing with vamps ( as they are my favorites )and many that feature werewolves as well either as main characters or secondary characters. I love ghost stories too but I find that there are very few out there sadly at least compared to their more popular supernatural cousins the vamps and weres. Now as for ghosts in real life, I personally am a true believer that they exist due to personal experiences of my own, and some of my close family and friends as well. So I really love the few great ghost romances that I have found. Here are just a few (due to time and this list would be WAY to long if I listed all of them LOL) of the many paranormals that are on my keeper shelves....

Kerrelyn Spark’s Love at Stake series (if you haven’t had a chance to read these great books you don’t know what your missing! They have it all hot romance and LOL moments as well as deep drama what more could you ask for!)

Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse series - if you love the tv series Tru Blood you will fall head over heels for this great series, I prefer the books personally and think they are 100 times better than the series with a TON less cursing as well. I think there is more cursing in one episode of Tru Blood than there is in the first three books of the series. Plus there were so many unnecessary changes to the books that were done for no apparent reason they didn’t further the story in anyway they just were flat out weird changes in my humble opinion one major one is Tara she’s a sweetheart in the books but man she is something else on the series WHEW! Though I will say I’m loving Erik on TB as well he’s a hottie! LOL Even in the books I’ve always been an Erik girl myself! ;)

The awesome Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter series you just don’t find a better author out there anywhere (or a sweeter person in RL) than Sherrilyn. She is the QUEEN of Paranormal in my book.

Night Fires by Karen Harbaugh – this girl can write I so wish she had more books in this series.

Allie Mackay’s Ghost series these are FABULOUS if you love Scottish romance you are going to die for this one! (pardon the pun I couldn’t help myself) Allie is Sue Ellen Welfonder’s pen name for her paranormals and those of you that love her historical’s really need to give these a try too they are awesome!

Shannon Drake’s Vampire Series – She’s one of the best out there in any genre and if you haven’t tried her vamps yet your in for a big treat!

Monday again and buttons finally!

Well it's Monday again and I have to say I'm kinda like Garfield with Mondays I hate them LOL. So to get myself going and hopefully cheer you all up too I'm posting this gorgeous MIK! Is there anything like a hunky man in a kilt to get the blood going? ;)

I'm sorry I haven't posted here in the last few days school has just started back for my son and it's been that much more busy around here. I home school him so I'm the teacher along with all the other household stuff and working on my graphics biz as well. So it's been a wee crazy around here. I love homeschooling him though its very rewarding. I know it's the best for him because he's always been kind of hyper and I can split his lessons up so he doesn't have to sit so still for long periods of time, and can focus on his problem areas for as long as we need to till he gets it instead of just skipping on to something else. Plus the big things like I know he's safe and he's not exposed to so many bad influences until he's older and knows better than to let himself be pressured into things etc.

There are still so many things I want to get done here on the blog I still want to get the interviews page set up like the reviews with a nice neat menu. (I hope to get that done this week) As well as get the blog awards done and ready to go. (hopefully this week as well) I got good news there will be interviews with authors Cheryl St. John, Cindy Miles and Claudia Dain all in the next few weeks. I also heard back from Jennifer Ashley who also wants to do an interview and giveaway here as well in Sept! YAY I'm so happy and thankful that these wonderful authors want to do interviews here. I can't thank them enough because I know the are very busy ladies creating the books we love! OH and I haven't forgotten about the Vampires, Werewolves, and ghosts blog I wanted to do as well!

I did however get enough time to make up three little buttons or banners whatever you prefer to call them, to link to the blog here if you want too. If you are a follower and you link to me, be sure to let me know so I can link your blog on here as well. :)

I want to say also that I just got my fortieth follower! WOOHOOO! I have met so many wonderful and talented people in the short time that I have had this blog. I thank all of you for your support and for making this such a fun ride so far! You guys are the best!!!

Menu and reviews galore *updated*

Hello my friends! I hope everyone has had a great week! It's TGIF thank the good Lord! LOL

Ok I finally got the menu bar up and running thanks to that brilliant & very sweet lady Barbara at Happily Forever After! HUGE HUGS dear I sure do appreciate it! I was starting to bang my head on the desk in frustration lol.

I hope the icons look ok. I'm still not sure if they look ok or goofy. What do you all think? I tried several different things but my more elaborate ideas I had ended up looking to busy, so I settled on the ones you see above for now.

I also spent about two hours tonight linking up all my past reviews that I have done on Night Owl Romance onto the reviews page as well. Yes I cheated *hangs head in shame* - in that I didn't make new posts for them for here I just linked them LOL! It was far easier than me copying and pasting all of them over. But I promise they are all ones by me. All in all with those and the 3 I have done here on the blog there are now 80 reviews listed there now. I hadn't realized I had actually done that many reviews!!! I have been very fortunate in the 2 and a half years I have been with Night Owl to review some really wonderful book and meet many wonderful people. :)
UPDATED
**I just got my rating system complete and up on the reviews page as well. The ratings are 1 sapphire heart - 5 sapphire hearts. With 4.5 - 5 being a Top Pick and winning the Sapphire Quill Award.**

Review: Land of Falling Stars

Land of the Falling stars is the newest novel from up and coming author Keta Diablo.

It is set during the turbulent times of the Civil War. Sophia Whitfield has lost nearly everything to this horrible war her parents, her brother, and her entire way of life up till now. She has managed to keep Arbor Rose above water but just barely; no thanks to the raiding of Yankees that have left she and her remaining servants with very little to survive on themselves. So when she sees another dreaded Yankee meandering down the road toward her home she has had enough! She grabs her father’s rifle and shoots the approaching soldier. But when she draws near she is horrified to see that she has shot none other than Gavin Langdale (one of her closest friends since childhood friend, who left to join the Union army when the fighting started). Desperate to save his life she takes care of him night and day with the help of Old Nap and Brister (her faithful helpers who wanted to stay with her even after the emancipation) praying that he will survive.

When Gavin awakens he sees the angel that has haunted his thoughts and dreams hovering over him. Sophia Whitfield and Jesse Grantham and he had been the very best of friends growing up together on the banks of the Rappahannock. Though Gavin always harbored feelings for Sophia he never allowed them to show or did anything about them because she was promised to marry Jesse from birth. But now looking up at her all of those feelings seem to overwhelm him. Sophia is ecstatic that he has returned and will recover from the gunshot. But he wonders if she would feel the same if she knew of the horrible secret that he is harboring indeed the very reason that he has come back to Arbor Rose. On a battlefield filled with chaos and smoke and the sounds of death all around him he fired at an approaching Rebel soldier only to find when he drew near to him that he had shot and killed Jesse Grantham, his best friend and Sophia’s intended. He is devastated by what he has done and he has come back to tell Sophia the truth.

But when she is so glad to see him he finds that he doesn’t want to ruin this time with her just yet. So he sets about helping her with much needed repairs around Arbor Rose and finds that the feelings he harbors for Sophia are stronger than ever. And when she starts to display feelings for him as well can he come clean with her about what he’s done and ruin what has been his secret dream from the time he was 13, ( to have her love)?

Will their passion be enough to see them through the trials that they are about to face or will the truth and circumstances tear them apart? Or will a band of cutthroats kill them both before they ever have the chance to find out? And there is much, much more to this story but you are going to have to buy this one to find out more!

Keta Diablo has penned a beautiful and haunting love story full of passion, deception, danger and the epic War Between the States that will leave you breathless and longing for more! I loved this story from beginning to end! It’s a true page turner that you will hate to see end. Keta really has a knack for getting you beneath her characters skins. This is one of those rare books that you don’t want to miss out on! And I’m sure you will agree with me after you read it, that Keta Diablo is a name that we will be seeing a lot more of in the coming years to which I say bravo!

Interview with the fabulous Jo Goodman

Today we have with us Best Selling author (and my personal favorite of all time) Jo Goodman! I'm so happy to have you join us today Jo! I must start this interview by saying that you are responsible for getting me started into the wonderful world of romance because it was one of your books that hooked me and I've been an avid romance reader ever since! So I thank you for that and I thank you for being here. :)

JJ: Now can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

JG: Truly, I’m not a particularly interesting person. I like musical theater and dislike taxes. I have a fondness for cabbage rolls, chicken marsala, and cheese. I can ignore Starbursts, pretzels, and just about every kind of seafood. I watch too much TV. I choose winter over summer, fall over spring, caffeine over decaf.

JJ: Please tell us about your up coming release Never Love A Lawman?

JG: After writing 8 Regencies in a row, I decided to return to the American West, or the almost West. Never Love a Lawman takes place in a Colorado mining town in the 1880s. I particularly enjoyed creating the town, so much so that I think it may have become a character in its own right. The romance is in the relationship of the sheriff and a relatively new arrival in town; the conflict arises out of the railroad spur that assures the town’s survival and the tangle of ownership around the property.

JJ: This is your return to a western setting instead of Regency do you like one above the other or is one or the other harder to write about? (What is your personal favorite setting for your novels)?

JG: I don’t have a favorite setting as much as I do a favorite time. I do love the clothing and style of the Regency era.

JJ: And what would be that special book that you have written yourself do you have a personal favorite?

JG: I’m a bit of a sucker for the scoundrels that appeared in A Season to be Sinful, so that might be a favorite of mine.

JJ: What do you do on a typical writing day?

JG: Okay, it doesn’t get more boring than this: On weekends, I’m at the computer at 6:00 a.m. and if I’m having a good day, I might be done by 4:00 p.m. If not, I quit at 6:00 p.m. Sometimes I might take a break to go walking but usually that waits until I’m done writing. Since I start a book at the end of January and want to be done before Memorial Day, I spend some of those winter months trying to get out before the light goes. During the week, I generally write a page in the morning, go to work, and write a page in the evening. I often take vacation time to write, so that helps me meet my personal deadline. This past year, for instance, I finished before Easter.

JJ: Now that is not boring at all I find it very interesting how different authors write and their habits in doing so. :) Jo what kind of research do you do for your books? Do you enjoy the research process?

JG: I research historical context, what was going on in the world at the time the story is taking place. I check out clothing, transportation, and items that might be in daily use. I have some old cookbooks that I use for thinking about meals that the characters might eat. I spend time diagramming a family tree. There’s always something extra that needs to be looked up. With Never Love a Lawman, it was guns.

JJ: If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?

JG: My heroines go through some pretty tough times, so I don’t know that I’d want to switch places with any of them. I suppose if I have to pick, I’d like to be Alexis Danty, the heroine pirate of my first romance. I love swashbuckling.

JJ: Is there a genre of book (and or setting or both lol) you would like to write but haven't yet?

JG: Science fiction. I’m just not smart enough.

JJ: What would be the best way for readers contact you? Do you have a website? Email address? MySpace site? Blog? Message Board? Group?

JG: Best way is through my website email. I respond to everything as long as it doesn’t end up in my spam.

JJ: Do you ever use real life actors or actresses as how you see your characters when you write in your head? I know I personally see them as the main characters a lot in the books I read when I’m reading them so I was just wondering if authors do that as well when they are writing them?

JG: I don’t do that consciously. The closest I ever came to that was when I had a movie ad for The Last of the Mohicans hanging by my desk. It had that great picture of Daniel Day-Lewis looking fierce as he ran toward the camera, his dark hair flying. I don’t even remember now what book I was working on at the time, I just know I’d glance over at that photo and sigh a lot.

JJ: Well no one can blame you for that hon he was hot in that movie. LOL

Jo thank you so much again for taking the time to be with us today! It was such a pleasure having here!!! And I can't wait to read Never Love a Lawman!

What a weekend!

Oh boy I couldn't wait for the weekend but what a weekend it has been! Good things first I received two more blog awards YAY!!!!! They were both from the very sweet fellow romance blogger SusiSunshine at her blog The Geeky Bookworm! Thank you so much Susi I love them both and am very honored that you thought of me! :) And here they are:

Spread the Love Award

And I would like to share this and pass this on to these wonderful ladies...
(Trying to keep it simple so I chose only four this time.)

Leontine at Leontine's book Realm
Amy C. at Romance Book Wyrm
Cindy at I ♥ Book Gossip
Caffey at Caffey Reads

And also she awarded me The Lovely Blog Award

And the rules for this one were...

1. Accept the award, post it on your blog together with the name of the person who has granted the award, and his or her blog link.

2. Pass the award to other blogs that you’ve newly discovered. Remember to contact the bloggers to let them know they have been chosen for this award.

(Again let me hasten to say that this one was very hard to decide on as there are so many lovely blogs out there that I love to visit. I tried to keep it simple by limiting my choices to only five who haven't yet received it from others.)

My nominees are:
Cecile over at All I Want and More
Book Junkie at Book Junkie
VampFanGirl at Lovin' Me Some Romance
Barbara at Happily Forever After
And all the gals over at Petticoats and Pistols!

Again I wish I could give them to everyone's blog that I enjoy but if I missed you please don't think it's because I don't love your blogs. But due to time and the fact that many that I follow already have these awards, I just chose four that hadn't so gotten them so far!

Another yipee moment was I got two new books to review in the mail!

Sue Ellen Welfonder's - A Highlanders Temptation (which I quickly dived into and will have the review up later this week God willing!)

And Catherine Spangler's Touched by Light I haven't had the chance to read any of her books before but look at this cover oms who could resist that!!! If the book is half as good as the cover I'll be in heaven! LOL

And big Congrats to EVA S who is the winner of the Vanessa Kelly Giveaway Congrats hon I know you will enjoy Mastering the Marquess! Thanks to all who entered and commented on the interview! :)

Now for the one bad thing that kinda put a damper on the rest of the weekend... the hubby got attacked by a bunch of yellow jackets while mowing our lawn! OMS scared the heck out of me!!! They stung him on his legs and arm, but I gave him a benedryl almost immediately, got the stingers out, and put ice then antibiotic on them and he was ok accept for being in pain. The poor guy thank GOD he didn't have an allergic reaction or we could have been in a lot of trouble.

So for everyone when your out there working in the yard be very careful and watch for nests in bushes and in this case they were in the ground near one of the bushes. If you see one get away FAST because they will gang up on you! I hope there is no more drama like that for a long time!
