Interview with the fabulous Jo Goodman

Today we have with us Best Selling author (and my personal favorite of all time) Jo Goodman! I'm so happy to have you join us today Jo! I must start this interview by saying that you are responsible for getting me started into the wonderful world of romance because it was one of your books that hooked me and I've been an avid romance reader ever since! So I thank you for that and I thank you for being here. :)

JJ: Now can you start by telling us a little about yourself?

JG: Truly, I’m not a particularly interesting person. I like musical theater and dislike taxes. I have a fondness for cabbage rolls, chicken marsala, and cheese. I can ignore Starbursts, pretzels, and just about every kind of seafood. I watch too much TV. I choose winter over summer, fall over spring, caffeine over decaf.

JJ: Please tell us about your up coming release Never Love A Lawman?

JG: After writing 8 Regencies in a row, I decided to return to the American West, or the almost West. Never Love a Lawman takes place in a Colorado mining town in the 1880s. I particularly enjoyed creating the town, so much so that I think it may have become a character in its own right. The romance is in the relationship of the sheriff and a relatively new arrival in town; the conflict arises out of the railroad spur that assures the town’s survival and the tangle of ownership around the property.

JJ: This is your return to a western setting instead of Regency do you like one above the other or is one or the other harder to write about? (What is your personal favorite setting for your novels)?

JG: I don’t have a favorite setting as much as I do a favorite time. I do love the clothing and style of the Regency era.

JJ: And what would be that special book that you have written yourself do you have a personal favorite?

JG: I’m a bit of a sucker for the scoundrels that appeared in A Season to be Sinful, so that might be a favorite of mine.

JJ: What do you do on a typical writing day?

JG: Okay, it doesn’t get more boring than this: On weekends, I’m at the computer at 6:00 a.m. and if I’m having a good day, I might be done by 4:00 p.m. If not, I quit at 6:00 p.m. Sometimes I might take a break to go walking but usually that waits until I’m done writing. Since I start a book at the end of January and want to be done before Memorial Day, I spend some of those winter months trying to get out before the light goes. During the week, I generally write a page in the morning, go to work, and write a page in the evening. I often take vacation time to write, so that helps me meet my personal deadline. This past year, for instance, I finished before Easter.

JJ: Now that is not boring at all I find it very interesting how different authors write and their habits in doing so. :) Jo what kind of research do you do for your books? Do you enjoy the research process?

JG: I research historical context, what was going on in the world at the time the story is taking place. I check out clothing, transportation, and items that might be in daily use. I have some old cookbooks that I use for thinking about meals that the characters might eat. I spend time diagramming a family tree. There’s always something extra that needs to be looked up. With Never Love a Lawman, it was guns.

JJ: If you could be one of your characters – Who would you be? And why?

JG: My heroines go through some pretty tough times, so I don’t know that I’d want to switch places with any of them. I suppose if I have to pick, I’d like to be Alexis Danty, the heroine pirate of my first romance. I love swashbuckling.

JJ: Is there a genre of book (and or setting or both lol) you would like to write but haven't yet?

JG: Science fiction. I’m just not smart enough.

JJ: What would be the best way for readers contact you? Do you have a website? Email address? MySpace site? Blog? Message Board? Group?

JG: Best way is through my website email. I respond to everything as long as it doesn’t end up in my spam.

JJ: Do you ever use real life actors or actresses as how you see your characters when you write in your head? I know I personally see them as the main characters a lot in the books I read when I’m reading them so I was just wondering if authors do that as well when they are writing them?

JG: I don’t do that consciously. The closest I ever came to that was when I had a movie ad for The Last of the Mohicans hanging by my desk. It had that great picture of Daniel Day-Lewis looking fierce as he ran toward the camera, his dark hair flying. I don’t even remember now what book I was working on at the time, I just know I’d glance over at that photo and sigh a lot.

JJ: Well no one can blame you for that hon he was hot in that movie. LOL

Jo thank you so much again for taking the time to be with us today! It was such a pleasure having here!!! And I can't wait to read Never Love a Lawman!

Jenn, you also do her website (jogoodman.com), right? How did you ever get the website and yahoo group gigs?! That's so cool (and you do nice work on the website, too, by the way). I could have used your skills when I needed my home business website set up! LOL.

Do you work with Jo in person or over the phone, or what?! I'm dying of curiosity here! LOL. Thanks.

Hi Angela hon I'm sorry it took me so long to answer my email is backed up and I just saw this one! Yes I do Jo's website for her. It was a great honor for me as I have said she is my favorite author in the world lol. So I was a fan first and we had written back and forth via email several times, and she knew that I did graphic design so when she wanted to switch web providers she contacted me and asked me if I would like to do it for her and of course I was beside myself!!!!!!! LOL heck I told her I would have even done hers for free but she wouldn't let me LOL! She's a sweetheart! Unfortunately no I haven't had the chance to meet her in person we have corresponded mainly via email and snail mail so far. :)

Hon anytime you need a graphic designer you just let me know I would love to work with ya! :) Thanks so much for all your kind words! I'm always glad to hear with people like the designs :)

HUGS and have a great one!!!
