Being Thankful

Tuesday, November 24, 2009

Its that time of year again when we are all gearing up for the big Thanksgiving feast with loved ones and friends. This year is very bittersweet for me and I have to admit I'm not feeling very festive at all and I think that's why I haven't been very chatty or making my rounds lately like I normally would. So you all please forgive me and I say this so that you all will know why I suddenly seem a little less there than normal and not myself etc. Some of you may know this some of you may not but I lost my mother earlier this year after a very long illness. And while I know that she is now in a better place and not hurting anymore which I am very thankful for indeed. I do miss her and as the holidays are coming up I find that it's hitting me again that she's not here anymore.

But I still have many, MANY things to be thankful for, and for which I thank God for each and everyday. My wonderful husband and son, my friends, our homes, all of the frivolous blessings that we have and enjoy that we don't need but that make our lives more fun, and this year something new as well - YOU my new blogger friends!

I just want to say a big thank you to all of you for sharing my days and some of my favorite things with me. You all have made this year a lot easier for me. But please do remember to spend all the time you can with your loved ones while they are still with you and you have time. Enjoy them and tell them you everyday how much they mean to you. :) And as some of you may be traveling soon I wanted to go ahead and post this early so you could see it. I wish you all a very Happy and Safe Thanksgiving! May God bless you and yours throughout the rest of this year and in the coming one as well. :)

Review: Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs

Saturday, November 21, 2009

This is the first novel by Molly Harper and it is not your normal vampire book. Think of it as a mix of Janet Evanovich meets Sookie Stackhouse and you’re getting close to what delights await you! Now do you think that you have ever had a bad day? I a really bad day? Well meet Jane Jameson who is having the day from H-E-Double hockey sticks on a stick…. First she is fired from her job (out of the blue) as the children’s librarian at the local library. And instead of a severance check - she is handed a 25 dollar gift certificate for potato skins at a local bar. Now that’s class right? The only halfway decent thing that happens to Jane in fact is that she meets a dark handsome stranger while at the bar cashing in her severance ah er skins... Then while Jane is driving home (after getting good and tipsy) her car breaks down. Just one more thing that could and did go wrong today right? But little did Jane realize that her night is about to take a turn for the very worst! But it can’t possibly get any worse you say? OH yes my friends it can and it does…

While she is hoofing it down the dark and rural road toward home she is mistaken by a drunk redneck for a deer. And what would any good hunter do? He whips out his rifle and shoots Jane! Not the way Jane wanted to die and the perfect end to the perfect bad day. But that wasn’t the end of Jane after all... for three days later she awakens in the home of the handsome man from the bar (Gabriel Nightengale) to find that he is a vampire and that she too is now a member of the Undead! Needless to say all that Jane thought she knew is turned upside down and pitched out like yesterday’s dishwater.

You then follow Jane throughout her transition into the world of the Newly Undead. Along for the ride are the Ghost of her dead Aunt that she didn’t know was haunting her house, her best friend that upon learning Jane is a vampire stabs her, and her family which makes almost makes the Simpsons look normal. Oh yeah and you won’t believe the trouble she lands herself into when she tries to integrate into the undead community! Jane Jameson’s life was rather plain up until she died, but her after life is going to be anything but…

Ms. Harper has created a true gem in the rural community of Half Hollow KY, and a cast of characters and secondary characters that you won’t soon forget! Her writing is fresh, down to earth, and just down right hilarious. I lost count of how many times I found myself laughing and chuckling while reading this one. So if you want to read a book and have a great time throughout, and laughs galore as well? This is the book for you! For me it was like Stephanie Plum with fangs! You keep thinking I wonder what in the world is going to happen to her next! LOL

I saw this one on the shelf at a recent trip to Books-a-Million and the cover was initially what caught my eye as well as the snappy and fun title! Everyone that knows me knows I’m a sucker for vampires, but this is one that I was very pleasantly surprised by-I thought it might be a fun little read and it turned out to be a whole lot more. I thoroughly enjoyed it and can’t wait to sink my teeth into the next one! So if you are a fan of funny books and a vamp fan you will really love this one!

New books for me! Happy Dance :)

Friday, November 20, 2009

I had a great week so far of new books coming my way so I thought I would share what I got in my mailbox and some that I purchased the last week or two here. Some great new reads that I am dying to dive right into, and of course I'll be sharing my thoughts on them after I finish them! :)

First off from Night Owl Romance for me to review and I was jumping up and down when I got them : Desiring the Highlander by Michele Sinclair, Pride Mates by Jennifer Ashley, and Wild Instinct by Sarah McCarty!

Books I purchased: Running Wild by Sarah McCarty - (it's book one in her werewolf series so when I got Wild Instinct I had to get this one so I could get the whole story hehehe) And Going Rogue by Sarah Palin. I don't care what anyone says about her, or how the much the media wants to try to crucify her, I love this lady! She is a smart conservative powerhouse who just happens to share a TON of the same values that I hold dear myself and I think she's awesome! :) I so wish I could go and see her on her book tour but the closest she is coming to TN is Birmingham, AL sniff sniff.

Oh and I just finished Nice Girls Don't Have Fangs by Molly Harper earlier today and will hopefully have the review up on that tomorrow or by the weekend at least if RL allows lol. Great little book I can't wait to read the others. Picture Janet Evanovich's writing style with vampires it's great! Ok time for you all to tell me what you all got this week or are looking forward to getting soon! :)
